Safavid Isfahan was built around Naqsh-e Jahan, one of the largest public squares ever laid out, ringed by the turquoise dome of the Shah Mosque, the Ali Qapu palace and the Qeysarieh bazaar entrance. The Zayandeh-Rud river runs beneath its arched stone bridges, and an Armenian quarter across the water adds a second, distinct architectural voice.

A red-mudbrick mountain village where residents still wear traditional dress and speak an old Persian dialect. Its terraced streets and orchards make it one of Iran's most distinctive historic villages.
